Mr. Alvie James Johnson

Alvie James Johnson, 77, departed this life on August 2, 2026, at Southwest Regional Medical Center in McComb, Mississippi. He was born on March 4, 1949, in Magnolia, Mississippi, to the late Alvie Johnson and Myrtis Thompson-Johnson. He was the second-born child and the eldest son of his parents. Alvie was drafted into the United States Army in 1969 and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a Communications Specialist. Following his honorable release from the Army, he continued his military service by joining the Mississippi Army National Guard (MSARNG). He served as a member of HHC, 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry, in McComb, Mississippi, before being transferred to Detachment 2, HHC, 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry, in Brookhaven, Mississippi. He remained there until his retirement on September 8, 1999, completing 22 years of dedicated military service and achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSG)/E-6. After returning from Vietnam, Alvie married the love of his life, Betty Cockerham of Magnolia, Mississippi, on November 23, 1970. Their union was blessed with 55 years of marriage and was filled with love, commitment, and devotion. From this union, two children were born: Alvin Lamar Johnson, Sr., and Latonya Nacole Johnson. Alvie was a devoted husband and father who was dedicated to providing for and protecting his family. He was a hardworking man who took great pride in his work and in serving others. He was employed by Croft Metals in Magnolia, Mississippi, until his retirement in 1998. He also worked for The Great American Wirebound Box Company in Fernwood, Mississippi, for a short period while working at Croft Metals and serving his country in the MSARNG. Beyond his service to his country and his family, Alvie was a devoted servant of God. He was not only a Soldier in the MSARNG, but also a soldier for God. He dedicated his life to serving God and striving to live according to His will. His faith was an important part of who he was and how he lived his life. Alvie was preceded in death by his parents, Alvie Johnson and Myrtis Thompson-Johnson, and his sister, Ruby Johnson-McInnis, all of Magnolia, Mississippi. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 55 years, Betty Cockerham-Johnson; his son, Alvin (Shannon) Johnson, Sr., of Magnolia, Mississippi; his daughter, Latonya Johnson, of Millington, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Ariel Johnson, Alvin Johnson, Jr., Shayla (Darrit) Johnson-Cotton, and Shalia Johnson; his great-grandchildren, Saige Johnson, Roman Ard, and Josiah Cotton; and his siblings, Alma (James, deceased) Patterson, J.E. (Nancy) Johnson, Robert (Donnis) Johnson, Della Taylor, Ella Bates, and Shelly Tate, all of Magnolia, Mississippi. He also leaves to cherish his memory his honorary son, Lester (Katina) Isaac of Bartlett, Tennessee, along with a host of family members, and friends who will forever remember and cherish his life and legacy. Alvie's life was one of service—to his country, his family, and to God. His love, strength, dedication, and faith will remain a lasting part of the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he has departed this earthly life, his memory and legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones.
