Mrs. Norma Ruth Payton

Norma Ruth Bullock Payton was born May 27, 1931 in Tylertown, MS to Mr. Leslie and Mrs. Emma Magee Bullock. She also had a loving step-mother, the late Mrs. Jimmie Bullock. Norma departed this life on February 29, 2024. She attended Magee’s Creek School and completed the 8th grade. She worked hard and began her public work career at Continental Hotel in McComb, MS as a housekeeper and went on to work at Kellwood in Summit, MS for 23 years and 6 months. Norma joined Mt. Canaan M. B. Church at an early age and was an active member until her health failed. At the church, she served faithfully as a Deaconess, Sunday School teacher, Senior Choir Member, Mission Board, Mission Board Secretary, and Prayer Band. She entered into holy matrimony to Charles Edward Payton on May 22, 1948. To this union five children were born: Charles, Ora, Dorothy, Emogene and Janet. Norma was known for her baking skills. She was often called upon to bake cakes and pies for members in the community. Perhaps she was best known for making her German Chocolate Cake and Egg Pies. You would generally find some type of cake or pie at her house on the weekend or for sure during the holidays. She believed that one of her gifts was baking for her family and friends. She also didn’t think that writing down a recipe on paper was necessary, at least not for her. Norma was preceded in death by her husband Charles Edward Payton, one granddaughter, Keeshunda Robinson, one sister, Ethel Lenard, four brothers, Zim Bullock, Dudley Bullock, Leslie Bullock and Charles W. Bullock; one son-in-law, Joe Crump; six brothers-in-law, Edison L. Payton, Booker T. Mckelphin, Ellis Jenkins and Eugene Downs, J. D. Lenard, Ernest Mathews; two sisters-in-law, Leola Downs and Lola M. Jenkins. She leaves to cherish her memories, one son, Charles E. Payton of McComb, MS; four daughters, Ora K. Smith of Tylertown, MS; Dorothy L. Crump and Emogene (Tommy) Billups of Jackson, MS; and Janet (Floyd) Jenkins of Ruth, MS; one sister, Lurene Matthews of Tylertown, MS; two sister-in laws, Ernester Bullock and Edna McKelphin of Chicago, IL; one brother-in-law, Matthew (Rosie) Payton of Chicago, IL. She also leaves grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. A Visitation for Mrs. Payton will be held on Friday, March 08, 2024, from 6pm - 8pm at Craft-Dillon Funeral Home in McComb, MS. A Visitation will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 10am-11am at Mt. Canaan MBC in Tylertown, MS, with Funeral Services to follow at 11am. Rev. Timothy Hughes will officiate the funeral services with interment to follow in New Bethel Church Cemetery Tylertown.
